The real reason people ignore your outreach (it's not what you think)

Jul 16, 2025 12:26 am

Day 3: Safety briefings and procedure training. Making sure we know the protocols before heading into real situations next week.

Uncomfortable realization during today's briefing:

Most outreach gets ignored not because the message is bad, but because it feels transactional.

Think about your own inbox:

When someone messages you "Can we grab coffee to discuss opportunities," what's your first thought?

"What do they want from me?"

When someone asks "I noticed your recent post about AI in research - are you finding users are more accepting of AI recommendations when they understand the underlying logic?" what's your first thought?

"That's an interesting question. Let me think about that."

The difference: One feels like someone wants something. The other feels like someone is thinking about your world.

Most UX professionals have been trained backwards:

"Tell them about yourself."

"Pitch your value."

"Ask for meetings."

What actually works:

"Show curiosity about their challenges."

"Ask about their experience."

"Share observations about their industry."

Real example (anonymized):

Instead of: "Hi, I saw you're hiring UX professionals. I'd love to learn more about opportunities..."

This works: "Hi [Name] – Found your portfolio during my research! Love your [specific project] case study. Also saw that you moved from [Previous Company] to [Current Company]. I was from [Same Background] too. Curious about how you made the shift. Which do you think helped land you the role? Your soft skills/mindset or design skills/portfolio?"

Response rate: 10x higher than job applications

Why this works:

  • Shows you researched their background (you care)
  • References specific work they're proud of (you're paying attention)
  • Asks about their experience (you're curious about them, not needy for yourself)
  • Feels like professional curiosity, not job hunting
