Why panels don’t trust you (even when the hiring manager does)

So yesterday I shared the story of a design leader who kept making it to final interviews — but never converting.
Today I want to talk about why that happens.
Because this is a hidden trap for senior UX folks:
The hiring manager is sold.
But the rest of the panel just… isn’t.
So the offer dies.
Even though you’ve “done everything right.”
Here’s the truth no one says out loud:
In a final panel, you’re not being judged on your design anymore.
You’re being judged on your clarity.
Clarity of thinking.
Clarity of intention.
Clarity of leadership.
And most importantly:
Clarity of fit.
Let me break it down.
Here’s how a typical final round plays out:
• You’ve passed the bar for skill
• You’ve told a few strong stories
• You’ve shown you’re collaborative
But now, the panel’s thinking:
• “Can I trust this person in a room with my stakeholders?”
• “Would I follow this person’s lead?”
• “Can they influence? Drive? Align?”
If your answers sound fuzzy… they hesitate.
Even just one unclear response, and someone on the panel says:
“Hmm. I’m not sure.”
That’s all it takes.
One person hesitating = panel consensus breaks = no offer.
This is why clarity creates compounding trust.
Let me explain:
Clarity is infectious.
If you speak with sharpness and conviction:
• People lean in.
• They trust you faster.
• They assume you’re more senior.
The clearer you are, the more confident they feel hiring you.
But if you sound vague or uncertain:
• People start guessing your intentions.
• They assume there’s a “gap” they missed.
• They move on to the next candidate.
You could be the most qualified person in the room —
But if your message is unclear, no one will remember what you said.
So what does clarity look like?
It’s not having perfect answers.
It’s this:
• You know what kind of work you want to do
• You can name the kinds of problems you solve best
• You speak like a peer, not like someone asking for permission
That’s what earns trust in a panel.
And that’s what separates finalists… from hired candidates.
If you’re stuck at final interviews and not converting…
Ask yourself:
“Do I sound like someone with conviction?”
Because when you speak with clarity, you give people permission to believe in you.
Let me help you build that clarity.
