The swing that changed how I think about career momentum

Last month, I'm on this swing at a glamping site in the countryside.
Just sitting there, pushing myself back and forth.
And I'm watching other people around the property.
Some are frantically taking photos of everything. Others are checking emails on their phones. A few are planning their next activity before they've even finished the current one.
But the swing forces you to just... be present.
You can't rush it. You can't hack it. You just push off, let gravity do its work, and enjoy the ride.
That's when it hit me.
Most designers approach their job search like those frantic photo-takers.
They're constantly doing something. Updating their portfolio for the 15th time. Tweaking their LinkedIn headline. Applying to another 20 jobs. Researching new design trends they "should" know.
All motion, no momentum.
Real career progress works more like that swing.
You do the strategic work upfront - build genuine relationships, create compelling case studies, position yourself as someone companies want to hire.
Then you let that work create its own momentum.
You don't chase every job posting. You don't panic-apply when you see a "perfect" role. You don't constantly second-guess your approach.
You trust the process you've built.
The designers I work with who land their dream roles fastest aren't the ones doing the most activities.
They're the ones who built the right relationships and let those connections create opportunities.
Like a swing, once you get the motion going, it carries you forward with much less effort.
The hard part isn't staying busy with job search tasks.
The hard part is trusting that strategic relationship-building works better than constant activity.
In Career Creators, we spend the first week helping you identify exactly which relationships to build and how to approach them authentically.
No spray-and-pray networking. No awkward cold outreach.
Just a clear plan for connecting with the right people at your target companies.
Because sometimes the best career moves happen when you stop frantically searching and start strategically positioning yourself.
Reply "Swing" if you want to hear more about how we help designers build momentum that lasts.
