RPO Roulette: When to Throw, When to Run - A QB's Dilemma

Coach -
RPO seems simple on the whiteboard (as do most plays). The reality is, there are key components that make or break a play and that couldn’t be truer than with the decision making in Run-Pass Option.
When scripting an offense you have to aim to have both a diverse set of options as well as plays that you can run with ease and efficiency. Doing this becomes a lot easier when your QB is trusted and in command. Today Coach Kaufmann reports on how to take those guys to the next level with the teaching you glean from these clinics.

Developing some sort of way for your athletes to internalize the manner at which you want them to read and make decisions is really of the utmost importance. Find an acronym or adopt one that places an emphasis on your order of operation in the read like Coach Opgenorth does here!
At the end of the day when it comes down to it coaches are teachers and developing a methodology that allows you to reach the players as best as possible. Giving the players something to remember and that can easily be channeled through various mental queues that are ingrained in practice are items that can elevate these athletes' play.
Use Technology for More Reps
Another concept diving into the idea of processing and advancing the comfort of that processing level and speed is the introduction of technology. JR Davies gives us a real glance at this.

Use the resources available to you! As teachers of the game just like those in the classroom you have to find new and innovative ways to get guys in tune with what you are teaching. In that same manner finding ways to connect all your athletes to your points and in whatever teaching style that needs to be.
Be innovative and be transformative; it doesn't always have to be the old school whiteboard X’s and O’s option. Explore tools like Go Army Edge that are free to you and maybe even use some of that booster club money for items like an oculus that can become tools to a variety of positions.
Visualization is a strong tool in learning and athletes may not understand how to properly practice it. This is an easy way to guide them.
RPO Reads
A final piece of this is we are giving the success of a play into what largely should be our most trusted players position. Understand this idea with Coach Brian Taylor.
The idea behind this simpler approach is we are telling our QB the exact scenarios that they can see and we can really train these to almost an exact science. This is what you are going to get and this is the answer essentially. This approach allows your QB to consistently make the right decision and it allows you to get those early down chunk gains abundantly.
Whatever your approach may be to the RPO system and what you think you may know the value in exploring and learning the various techniques that may help your teaching or philosophy grow are abundant in these presentations.
As Always,
Compete!
