Rethinking Defense...From Structure to Communication

Coach ,
Oregon Analyst Dante Bartee is definitely a favorite to watch clinic. He is a deep thinker on the game and organized in both his ideas and his presentation. I appreciate how he studies and teaches the game, and I expect him to continue to rise through the ranks.
This past off season at Lauren’s First and Goal he presented on “Rethinking Defense: From Structure to Communication.”
Philosophy - The Why
For him it all starts with thinking about the Why, What, and How of defense. The Why is philosophy. The What is the structure, and the How is the technical and teaching part of defense. He shares that in this video:
Tactics - The What
He explains how a very generic principle becomes multiple quickly. He starts by illustrating the 4-2-5. The methodology is “left-right” and the pieces can move according to the formation. The left right quickly becomes strong-weak because of how they define passing strength. He makes the point that these are things to think about as you put the structure together.
Teaching It - The How
Now it becomes putting concepts together to create dominant toolboxes. From a teaching perspective to fit together so the players can understand how to play it better. It’s about where you start the teaching to affect things like eye control. It allows you to teach what you want done before the ball is even snapped.
Video: Putting Together Conceptual Frameworks
This presentation covers a lot but it’s a good time to study these things as you look to solve some issues that popped up this season.
It is part of a bundle from Lauren’s First and Goal. The rest of the courses included are shared below.
I hope you are able to learn a lot this off season in order to evolve and move your team forward.
Always be growing!
