Coach Excellence Day 41 - Use Pullers for Explosive Play Action Passing

Coach ,
“A very wise coach once told me, ‘If you really want play action, you better pull a guard.’” - Greg Roman, Offensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens
Without a doubt, Coach Roman has developed one of the most interesting and successful offenses in the NFL. Play action is a huge part of the offense, and the strategy of utilizing a puller definitely draws the defense up and opens up big opportunities for shots downfield on play-action.
It’s a strategy that Joe Austin, head coach and creator of the “Tex Bone” offense utilizes. Coach finds an efficiency in his teaching by making this concept flexible enough to accommodate 5,6, 7, and even 8 man protection while utilizing multiple pass concepts like verticals, posts and corners, and in and out routes.
While many might see his marriage of flexbone to spread, there’s a ton to learn from him in these concepts that can truly be applied to any offense.
For Coach Austin, it starts with a 6 man protection that looks like their double pull power play. He illustrates the protection against all fronts in this video.
Once you get a downhill run game going like Austin does, the immediate response is to stop the run with a loaded box and play a one high defense behind. That opens the opportunity for the quarterback to hit the seams on rhythm away from the free safety’s reaction.
Austin shows that on game film here:
Coach explains the entire concept including the protection and route variations in his course “Double Pull Power Pass”. Regardless of what system you run, there’s definitely takeaways to make help you create explosive play action.
The one thing I love about flexbone coaches is they understand the details of their offense and always have an answer. We see elements of this kind of offense in the Baltimore Ravens and across college football, with Coastal Carolina bringing it to the forefront right now.
Coach Austin and a number of flexbone coaches have an exclusive triple option clinic this week. If you are interested in any elements of the triple-option offense, this is the clinic to attend this offseason.
Check out the full line-up. These coaches present for 3 hours at a time and go deep into detail. It is a who’s who of option football.
