Get an Edge by Teaching Special Teams with Technology

Coach ,

Today, we take a look at free technology used to teach special teams by giving your players a unique view of the scheme through their own perspective using Go Army Edge.

At the high school level, Chris Wolfe, head coach at Male HS (KY), is always looking for the best way to teach and coach his schemes.

The two-time state champion teaches their highly effective wall return scheme illustrating the assignments of each group and giving various perspectives through the Go Army Edge app.

He teaches his team with this tool including putting the punt returner in virtual reality view to get more reps and looks at how the blocking sets up after catching the punt.

Coach Wolfe shares the success of the scheme in this video:

Here’s an overview of the scheme from their playbook. Go Army Edge creates a clean, illustrated look. Coach Wolfe explains the scheme in this video:

We can shoot hundreds of balls at the returner with a Jugs machine, but how many times can we show him what that will look like after bringing his eyes down from securing the catch and finding his lane and blockers.

Coach Wolfe came up with an innovative approach to getting those reps with Go Army Edge. From putting snap shots of that view in their playbook to being able to put an Oculus on the player and allowing him to see, in first person perspective, how his blocks will develop, those returners get the looks they need in order to play fast on the field, and the results are there. He shows that here:

At the 3rd Annual Lauren's First and Goal Virtual Clinic Ben Kotwica, Special Teams Coordinator for the Denver Broncos, covered all the details of his punt install as well as the drills and technology he uses to teach his players in the NFL.

Whether you use this scheme or not, the template that Coach Kotwica shares can serve as the guide for you to use cutting edge teaching to install your special teams schemes. Here’s an overview of how he breaks down the teaching components of their punt:

He goes on to explain how he uses technology to create an interactive team room, and more opportunities for reps.

This gives him the opportunity to create the rush in Go Army Edge and get reps (projected on a wall) through the app. Below you see the actual game video of the rush they are working against and then the exact same rush in the app projected on a wall. They now get more reps for both starters and backups.

The technology is worth checking out (it's free). You will find that there’s plenty of uses for every position. It is especially helpful to a special teams coordinator looking for ways to get more reps to perfect his scheme.

Always be growing!
