As he did the first time he presented in 2021, Akron Head Coach Joe Moorehead had the top rated presentation at the 2023 Lauren’s First and Goal Clinc which saw over 130 pro and college coaches volunteer to share their football knowledge to help fight pediatric brain cancer.
Coach Moorehead presented on “6 for 6 Run Game and RPO.”

He definitely kept the high standard as when he did his first presentation at the 1st Lauren’s First and Goal Clinic. We share some of his ideas here.
Coach Moorehead is one of the best at the RPO and may have been doing RPO’s longer than anyone. It goes back to his days at Akron the first time and has continued to evolve throughout his career. Coach Moorheead believes that there are key elements necessary for an RPO to be successful and he covers them in this video:
Coach Moorhead points out that we overcomplicate things as coaches. He subscribes to the philosophy that simpler is better. There is no play that answers everything. He wants to maintain their aggressive mentality while minimizing risk on the field.
One simple RPO concept he likes is their gap scheme-Mike isolation RPO. It allows them to utilize QB draw, a swing and free access to aggressively attack the defense with a numbers or leverage advantage somewhere in the defense. He shows it here:

You can count on Coach Moorhead to be very creative with what he does with the RPO. Utilizing the flat route on the perimeter to a receiver or running back, he brings the tight end back underneath on a shovel and creates a true triple option.
