10 Takeaways - Lauren’s First and Goal - Day 1 Hightlights

Mar 09, 2023 2:34 pm

Coach ,

The response by coaches wanting to present at this clinic was so big that we added March 8th to accommodate those speakers, and Day 1 did not disappoint.

I was able to pop into several clinics and watch for at least a few minutes. There’s definitely more than “one thing” you can take away from these speakers.

Below I share some highlights from Day 1 which had 18 coaches presenting.

#1) “Leadership Perspective” - Lew Caralla, S&C, Charlotte

Be honest, earn their respect and go through what they are going through.  Do the workout to know how to coach them and know if they are giving effort and keep them safe.

From there he shared a wealth of knowledge on leadership. This is one that every coach should watch. It will definitely get you thinking about how you lead.

#2) “Offensive Principles and RPOs” Scotty Walden, Head Coach, Austin Peay

I received a text from Coach Loose while I was watching this one, “Scotty Walden is killing it. Really impressive.” I couldn’t agree more. He begins with sharing the philosophy of how they operate as an offense and how they refuse to be dictated to by a defense. Tempo is a huge aspect of their attack. He then shows his different RPOs and how those fit that philosophy.

#3) “OL IZ Fundamentals” - Ron Crook, OL, South Dakota

If you have seen Coach Crook present at LFGF or the COOL Clinic, you know he is going to give examples of both good technique and bad technique so you can learn what to look for when coaching your players. After going over the basics of the inside zone coach digs into the game film.

#4) “Developing Accuracy from the Ground Up” - Joey Lynch, OC/QB, Vanderbilt

Coach Lynch believes that a QB needs to play fast and confidence. A key to his confidence is accuracy. He has to put the ball in play so that the receivers can make plays. Coach Lynch shared his methods for developing accuracy starting with the feet.

#5) “How we break down our opponent” Don Dobes, DC, Darmouth

Coach Dobes makes the breakdown a responsibility of the entire staff delegating each coach an area of focus. He covers the details of how they do their work in breaking down an opponent then illustrates how those come together showing game film.

#6) “Coordinating and Offense” - Kyle Ohradzansky, OC, University of Findlay

Coach Ohradzansky shares insight into becoming an offensive coordinator reflecting on what he wished he knew when he first started as an OC. He takes us through step-by-step on doing the job of an OC and finishes by illustrating with game film how series build on series, game builds on game and year builds on year for a play caller.

#7) Pass Rush Principles” - Matt Edwards, Pass Rush Specialist, Las Vegas Raiders

Your job as a coach is to help every player in the room improve. Coach Edwards takes an individualized approach which begins with understanding the player’s strengths and weaknesses and enhancing, changing, or eliminating those aspects of the player’s skill set. He shares great examples from Raiders game film sharing the details of the technique being used.

#8) “Press Man - Morehouse College Style” - Gerard Wilcher, Head Coach Morehouse

Know the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent. The receiver split tells a story. This is the basis of how Morehouse plays their press man technique. Coach Wilcher did an excellent job of sharing all the details of how they play press man from stance to finish.

#9) “Coverage Skills and Drills” - Rob Keys, QC Special Teams, Ohio State

Field position is a critical part of the game and special teams have a direct effect on the game. Coach Keys covers the principles and techniques of the Buckeyes coverage units sharing both drill and game film.

#10) Tommy Moffitt, S&C Coach

Coach Moffitt explains that a lot of attention on heavy lifts and high-speed running combined your results in developing a dynamic explosive athlete will be greatly diminished.  You read that right…Coach Moffitt explains how they put together a program that will show good results. This one is full of takeaways from one of the best in the business.
