The Break Down
These two teams come into the week 3 matchup with very different backgrounds. The Vol’s come to the 2023 season while coming off of their best season since 2001. The Gators on the other hand are coming off the first back to back losing seasons since 1978 and 1979. For Coach Napier and the Gators, this is a big step on the task of turning around the program in the SEC which is as competitive as ever.
The commonality between these two teams though is they both return their core. Each team has substantial returners that have proven they can get the job done. With that also said they each are looking to replace highly touted QB’s.
To build on the common ground and see some more of the eerie coincidences, these teams are both leaning towards replacements that are transfer QB’s from the Big Ten with prior game experience. Joe Milton is the obvious favorite in Knoxville. While in Gainesville there seems to be a little more competition with Jack Miller III and Graham Mertz battling out for the duties. Regardless this should shape up to be a great early measuring stick for these two teams and an opportunity to head into SEC play with some momentum.
For this week we feature both an offensive and defensive standpoint to get everything rolling. The featured coaches for this week are Tennessee’s Glen Elarbee and Florida’s Jay Bateman.
The Vols Offense - OL
Coach Elarbee is detailing an offense encompassing course leading to the details of their tempo offense and the run game attached to it with an emphasis on the OL. From the opposite perspective Coach Bateman details LBer play within his program, he speaks on technique, drills and what they look for in recruiting. Take this opportunity to learn two perspectives on sides that will be on the field at the same time making both the game more interesting and adding to your knowledge base.
Within the element of the game optimizing time and helping yourself can prove to be very important. The smart athletes understand this. Some even try to get away with little things, in basketball I think of when a team is tired and lets the ball bounce after going through the net or “happens” to get bumped as it falls down the net delaying the game just a tad giving a brief breather. Little nuances that strategically can help your team in various schemes can be key.
For the Tennessee Volunteers the manner in which they handle the football so they can speed up the game is key. Coach Elarbee elaborates on it in this clip.

The Gators Defense - Linebackers
Your linebackers are the swiss army knife of the defense in a lot of cases. Largely they are becoming more and more athletic with a body type shift happening. When you think of a player that really needs to be skilled at everything this is the position. With these demands we must be able to adequately train and teach our athletes to meet the demands and prepare them for success. Implement and utilize Coach Bateman’s course to improve the play of this position.

While all the clinics we present give immense value, there is a degree that we understand you have to pick and choose what you take note of and implement now versus later.
With it being a few weeks into the season obviously you aren’t going to reinvent the wheel but, it is still early enough to add some larger additions that can be refined over the coming weeks. I encourage you to take a look at these clinics and the others and find more than just surface level changes.
