Making the Most of Tech Conferences
May 18, 2025 11:34 am
Hi ,
I recently attended two conferences and wanted to share some thoughts on how we can maximize value for everyone involved - ourselves, our companies, teams, speakers, attendees, and organizers.
The Conference Challenge
Most of us enjoy attending conferences, but there's always the challenge of justifying the time and expense to our companies. How do we ensure we're creating enough value to make it worthwhile? And how do we contribute to the community that makes these events possible?
Before the Conference
Prepare with purpose
- Create a specific list of goals for your visit
- Research the program beforehand and mark sessions relevant to your current challenges
- Look up speakers you don't know to help prioritize effectively
- Plan your days, but deliberately leave holes in your schedule for the "hallway track"
Remember that we need to create more value by attending in person than we would get from simply watching recorded talks later. This starts with intentional preparation.
During the Conference
Support the ecosystem
- Engage with presentations - rate them, ask thoughtful questions
- Acknowledge the volunteers who make the event possible (a simple "thank you" means more than you might think)
- Visit the exhibition booths while sessions are running (it's less crowded and you'll have better conversations)
- When standing in groups, form a "pacman" shape - always leave a gap so others can join your conversation
- Default to speaking English, even with people from your own country, to be inclusive
Maximize learning opportunities
- For each presentation, write down specific actions you'll implement when you return to work
- Don't be afraid to approach speakers after their sessions or in the hallway
- Say "yes" if someone asks to interview you or wants your perspective (even your challenges can provide valuable insights for others)
- Connect with other attendees - you have perfect icebreakers at a conference ("Which session did you enjoy most so far?")
The booths are often staffed by speakers and other prominent community members - these conversations can be invaluable for learning about new tools and making connections.
After the Conference
Share and implement
- Schedule a lunch presentation at work to share what you learned
- Identify opportunities to apply new knowledge in current projects
- If you have innovation time, try implementing something with your team
- Post about interesting talks on social media with your takeaways (tag the conference and speakers)
- Connect people you met who might benefit from knowing each other
Why This Matters
The Java community is remarkably friendly and welcoming. I've noticed how people genuinely care about each other, often helping without any selfish motives. They understand that by helping individual members, they strengthen the entire community.
This community will only continue to thrive if new members join to add their experiences and knowledge. You can be that person.
When I spoke with presenters from outside the Java ecosystem, they commented on how welcomed they felt and how much people genuinely cared about them. This is what makes our community special - we're inclusive and combine knowledge from diverse backgrounds.
Challenge for Next Time
For your next conference, I challenge you to:
- Speak to at least three people you didn't know before
- Ask a question during at least one session
- Share at least one key learning with your team
- Follow up with one new connection after the event
How do you make the most of conferences? I'd love to hear your strategies and experiences.
Until next time,
Markus
