What I Learned from 30 Days of Sharing (Plus: Meet Me at Devoxx UK & JCON!)

May 06, 2025 9:34 am

Hi ,

I recently challenged myself to share something valuable every single day for a month. As someone who once preferred sitting alone in a corner coding, this wasn't easy—but the results have transformed how I approach my work and learning.

The Daily Sharing Experiment

Before this experiment, I only shared when I had something I thought was "impressive enough." Sound familiar? But forcing myself to share daily shifted my thinking in an unexpected way.

I began constantly asking: "Could what I'm working on right now help someone else?" This simple question made me more observant and reflective about my own work. Like how modern Java features reduce cognitive load, this practice actually lightened my mental burden around "what's worth sharing" and helped me focus on deeper learning.

The benefits were immediate:

  • Stronger connections with developers worldwide
  • More meaningful technical discussions
  • Unexpected learning opportunities from others' responses
  • A clearer understanding of concepts (explaining something truly tests your knowledge!)

Even on days when I thought I had nothing interesting to share, the act of searching for something valuable forced me to structure my thoughts more carefully. Whether anyone responded or not, I was building my own understanding through the process of preparing to share.

Come Meet Me In Person!

I'm excited to announce that I'll be attending Devoxx UK this year! If you're going to be there too, I'd love to meet up and continue our conversations in person. There's nothing quite like face-to-face discussions to deepen our technical understanding and build genuine connections.

Additionally, I'm thrilled to be offering free mentoring sessions at JCON for attendees! If you're looking for guidance on your Java career path, code reviews, or just want to discuss technical challenges you're facing, this is your chance.

Spots are limited, so I encourage you to sign up soon if you're interested!

Your Turn

I'd love to hear about your experiences with knowledge sharing. Have you tried something similar? What's the biggest obstacle that keeps you from sharing more of your technical knowledge?

Reply to this email or reach out on social media—I read every message and would be delighted to continue the conversation.

Until next time,

Markus
