Space opera? Weird tale? Why not both?

Science fiction and fantasy - from Middle America to the ends of the Universe

Hi ,

One of the plusses of the indie publishing era is being able to write stories of various lengths and across the full range of science fiction subgenres. No editors are telling me to write a brand new book exactly like my last one. And though indies have the option of "writing to market," of pigeonholing themselves into a single niche in Amazon's category hierarchy, that's an option I decline. I'll write what the muse nudges me to write and let the chips fall where they may.

That variety shows up in two books I want to tell you about today. One's a new short story in a contemporary new weird setting that I think could make an entertaining episode of The New New New Twilight Zone. The other's a space opera novel that's been out for a while that is part of a promotion from an online bookseller.

New Short Story

Seven Out

Three young men.

One telekinetic power.

How far will they push their luck?

When my homey Jaymz said LeRoi—the weird guy who stares at his shoes through thick glasses—could make stuff move with his mind, I didn't believe him. I knew telekinesis wasn't real. But I still got them into that street craps game, where everyone packs heat.

I believed after that.

I joined them on a trip to a real casino in Louisiana, were we kept gold diggers from clawing their way into our growing stack of chips.

But nothing—I mean, nothing—prepared us for the high-roller tables out in Vegas.

Speaking of Vegas...

One quick note before I go. On Friday, November 10, I'll be at the 2023 Readers and Authors Vegas Event (RAVE) at the Horseshoe on the Strip in Las Vegas. If you're a Vegas local, or you'll be in town early for the F1 race weekend, come on by. I'll be selling and signing print and ebook editions of a lot of my books. Let me know you're a member of my Readers Club to get the secret in-person discount.

Till next month,

Happy reading!

Raymund
