Hope you're staying warm and avoiding falling tree kangaroos! 🦘

Voice recognition mistake of the week: When writing up an interview on the fourth Accidental Detective book, I dictated: "This plot allowed me to get Kate and Jen out of the city and into the rugged wilderness, where everything wants to buy or stab you." (I meant bite or stab you.)

Can a fifty-year-old journalist with a bad leg survive the dangers of the Arizona desert long enough to catch a killer? Spotlight on Someone Missing from Malapais Mountain: I share what inspired the book, plus some favorite lines and scenes, and an excerpt. See it here.

Release day blog post:Malapais means badlands, which has a nice ominous sound.  Arizona’s Malapais Mountain is near the Superstition Wilderness east of Phoenix. I like to hike, and this plot allowed me to get Kate and Jen into the rugged wilderness. In the southwest, the desert full of cacti and spiky plants—and maybe a rattlesnake or two. Everything wants to hurt you.” Read the post and see photos of the area.

Last weekend I spent a few days in California visiting a friend who was over from Australia. I also got to see my brother and his girlfriend. I did not get to see a lot of sun, as I was there during record rains. But we still got some great views!

I messaged a friend back in windy New Mexico: “Hope you're staying warm and avoiding falling tree ..." I was going to say branches but predictive text suggested falling tree kangaroos, and I guess one should avoid that too. (If you don't know what a tree kangaroo is, look it up. They're adorable!)

Cool Animal: Speaking of unusual animals, have you heard of or heard the kubong, aka colugo (aka flying lemur, but they don't fly and aren't lemurs)? They look and sound fake! Here's a video.

And here's Bear Bear showing how ferrets can be folded for easy transport.
