[reko.day] All About Rekos

Apr 21, 2023 2:03 pm

Happy Friday!

I don't have a video to show the app this week because I don't think I have enough interesting changes to show. That being said, I did get quite a bit done on it, and I'll describe that later on.

For now, though, let's talk about rekos. Reko is a specific abbreviation of a much larger Finnish phrase in the context of reko.day I'm going to give it a different meaning.

One of the key things about reko.day that makes it interesting is that it eliminates so much back-and-forth you have to do when you buy goods through services like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. You know, that whole thing where you contact them, negotiate a price, how to pay, when and where to meet, and then go with the ever-present concern they're an axe murderer.

That's a lot of junk to deal with for a jar of honey.

Reko.day solves this by allowing you to pay through the app and having public pickup locations and times. These pickups are pre-scheduled, and everyone shows up to pick up their goods from all the local farmers—almost like a pop-up farmer's market.

These pickup locations and times are "rekos." So you could think of reko.day as saying it's your pickup day.

Now, one of the bigger questions noodling around in my head is how do we create these rekos all over the country? I'm just one guy with a passion, but that isn't enough to set these up everywhere.

So I want to let you do that.

If you know of a place that'd be a good reko location and the owners agree, you'll be able to create a brand new reko right through the app. My hope is that this will make reko.day grow quickly in new areas without a lot of intervention on my part.

Maybe I'll show that in the next video!

There is a problem, though and I'd like to enlist your extra brainpower to help. With anything with the internet, there is a chance for misuse, and there is a possibility for people to create rekos when they don't have permission or they want to harass someone by making rekos at their home. So I have an idea on how to combat this.

When you submit a new reko, you also verify your identity. That means when you create a reko, you also make your real identity known. The thinking here is that you'd be less likely to set up a reko with malicious intent if you can't do it anonymously. Oh, but if your reko gets used consistently, then I want to give you a free subscription for a year.

Let me address a sinking feeling you might be having about you verifying your identity to yet another company. The only use for that information is as a deterrent from malicious use, and should something actually happen, we can effectively ban that person and help law enforcement if required. That's it. Your information will not ever be available to advertisers.

Whew, this is a long email. I'd love to know your thoughts about keeping the word "reko" around and the whole verification process. Just reply to this email with your thoughts and feedback!

App Updates:

  • Fully styled the shopping experience
  • Authentication with Apple works
  • Linked Apple account to reko.day accounts (Boring technical stuff)

Next:

  • Style the selling side of the app
  • Fully connect the selling side to back end

Sincerely,

Ryan
