Hi ,

Here's my latest blog entitled:

How Your LinkedIn Profile Introduces The Whole You

image

Generally speaking what is the reaction of job seekers when they get rejected at A senior sales professional Tony (not real name) with 15 years plus experience had sent me his resume for a review. I noticed that the Resume had less than half the impact considering his talents, skills, and expertise. It did not introduce the whole person, Tony to meI asked him “Why have you not emphasized your core skills and achievements which are your differentiators?” He said, “I know but how does one present everything in a 2 page resume?

I advised him for a few changes which would make his resume effective in attracting the attention of recruiters. More importantly, I asked him to supplement his candidature marketing with a well optimised LinkedIn profile. Because in today’s digital times, any recruiter first looks at your resume and immediately takes a look at your LinkedIn profile. Without a well presented LinkedIn profile you miss out on the most important element which builds your brand presence online. So along with your resume you need to supplement your efforts by including a powerful LinkedIn profile which unlike a resume, offers opportunities to showcase and demonstrate your uniqueness.

I studied his LinkedIn profile and noticed that like most senior professionals, he was not active. And he had not paid any attention to crafting his LinkedIn profile. The content was more of a copy-paste of the Resume. The tenure part can be similar to your resume however the About section, the headline are parts where you can put up content which is different than the resume. Also, there are multiple elements in a LinkedIn profile which help you make use of the dynamic nature of the digital platform. It is important to remember that a resume’s objective is to help you receive Interview Calls when you are seeking a job change.

Whereas a LinkedIn profile promotes you as a passive and potential candidate which helps in prospective employers discovering you.

I advised him to rewrite and handle his LinkedIn profile with the following tips in mind.

Let Me Share With You The 5 Things That Introduce The Whole YOU On LinkedIn:

1] Headline:

It should mention what you can do (keeping your target audience in mind) rather than simply a job title. You can take a look at my LinkedIn profile. The keywords used here are effective in moving your profile up amongst the top ones when recruiters’ search online.

2] About section:

It should differentiate you. Worldwide research shows that it takes 30 seconds for a reader to decide whether to read further or not. The LinkedIn profile’s About section is most critical because it helps in engaging the reader.

3] Demonstration:

Pictures, articles published, videos, case study presentations, awards are tools to showcase your talent beyond just a mention.

4] Engaging capability:

Knowledge shared through meaningful comments and interaction in relevant discussions within groups. You can share relevant articles on leadership/ management on your wall which present you as a thought leader. You can even share your professional experience and learning on your wall post.

5] Recommendations:

Recommendations from a senior professional, clients, team mates can built credibility further.

The Resume has it’s own place and purpose. Both the career tools are different and have to be used as a combination. And it is good to remember that in the marketing mix of your candidature promotion, LinkedIn plays a vital role which when used with the right strategy can open many more doors. Now for the past 4 to 5 months, Tony is using this additional and effective career tool. That has widened the net while searching for a job.

The beauty of the online medium is it’s dynamic and interactive nature. More so LinkedIn offers a platform to present multiple dimensions of your personality and you can keep updating it.

Best of luck for an improved engaging profile!!

All the best,
