Nadia Maria Iio Vlachos 9.30.1981 - 10.15.2019 Nadia would have been 39 today. Nadia always wanted to take pictures. I found these ones of us holding hands as kids and as adults. Side by side in this journey of life together. My sister is the reason I left pharmaceutical medications and began the journey inwards towards succeeding in health. The journey of relieving trauma on top of health protocols progressed for me even further when I was in a near death car crash in 2016. At the age of 35, I had deep suicidal ideations stemming from childhood trauma and compounded shame as well as being sexually abused in a foster home. I don’t know what my sister experienced in the same foster home when she was nine, but I do know my experience and how much abandonment we all received. When Nadia took her life just weeks after turning 38, the idea of taking my own life was closely creeping up on me. I’m thankful to have the support system I have to continue transmuting that feeling of wanting to not be in this reality. During the last few years of Nadia’s life, I was consistently trying to bring her to come see what I was trying to start here in Detroit. Nadia was miles apart in China and we kept in touch through post cards. Starting the @greaterimpacthouse was a way to initiate a response from Nadia to come back and heal through her art. As much as I tried to invite her back to the states, she was too far gone to want to come back. I’ve noticed that now with the pandemic in full swing, mental health issues have eclipsed being an epidemic. I invite more places to begin the process of creating spaces where creatives can work on transmuting their pain by creating their art. From my own experience, I have found that art and music therapy works. Beginning the start for the @greaterimpacthouse is a path that paves a way towards doing the work I was meant to do. Today I am one month into my 40s. I got the chance to meet, cook for and hang with @noahkalina and meet his hen, Marcel. Noah inspired me to get in front of the camera and film myself singing everyday. The Bag of Bones video would not be possible without his creations as inspiration. If you haven’t seen Noah’s latest release of a photograph a day for 20 years, it’s a pretty mesmerizing watch. Thankful to be invited over and get a glimpse in his studio. I also visited the peace palace nearby and had chai at the for the first time since arriving to New York. I walked a moss path around the palace and came across a hovering leaf. I’m 40 today and one step closer to revitalizing a part of Detroit. This is something I’ve wanted to do since graduating from Wayne State University in 2004.
