What is my altimeter check?

image

(Taken from the pilot's seat of my MC-130J Commando II on my fini flight last year)

Next week, my altimeter check will be 7,258 feet--far, far above that of West Point or Annapolis.

Nothing against my USMA or USNA friends, but our Academy is way above them altitude wise (and the altimeter check is a thing all cadets must recite).

Though we were delayed a year by the Coronapocalypse, it's finally reunion time. I can't wait to see some old friends, most of whom are, as I am, on the opposite end of their Air Force careers since we last saw each other. It's strange to think about. On one hand, it feels like I've lived several lifetimes since graduation. On the other, it feel like it was just yesterday that I hopped on a bus from Doolittle Hall to become a cadet.

On a somber note, I find two of the things I'm looking forward to the most are finding some old friends in the cemetery and looking up a new name on the War Memorial Wall.

Just about everything I am, and everything I've done with my life, started there.

It'll be wonderful to give my kids a closer look at the place. I wonder what's changed and what hasn't?

Much related...

For those who might be familiar with either the Fallen World, National Novel Writing Month, or both, I can happily announce that I'll be utilizing NaNoWriMo to get started on a Fallen World book. It'll tie into my short story ("Blue Falcon") that'll release with the upcoming Fallen World anthology. It'll be set on the grounds of the afore-mentioned Air Force Academy.

Anyway, onto the publication news.

In my last email, I forgot to mention that the 4HU anthology Gates of Hell was released on audio!

Among many other wonderful stories, this features "The Mushroom Farm", in which I introduced my principal character, Bull. It's the story that directly connects the epilogue to These Things We Do to the beginning of Mess With the Bull.

This is also the anthology in which I became the first and only author to have two stories in one 4HU anthology. My other story was "Freedom of Maneuver", co-written with my mentor, Kevin Ikenberry. It offers background into two of his favorite characters, Hex and Maya, but more importantly shows you the leadership and strategy style of Jessica Francis' ex-husband, Marc Lemieux. For those paying attention, Lemieux has an important role in the Peacemaker storyline.

For my next trick, I would like to re-direct your attention to the gritty, chilling JTF-13 series. The stories of a secretive US military unit, who has fought the world's monsters in the shadows, dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War.

Start with Origins-

image

A collection of stories from across time, the quintessential introduction to the soldiers of JTF-13.

https://www.amazon.com/Origins-Joint-Task-Force-Anthology/dp/B096GWPPBY/

Next up, is the tale of a classic bunch of WWII misfits on the trail of true-to-life gremlins, just days after the D-Day invasion.

Finally, the story of Red, following the US Navy across decades in the hunt for an elusive evil, who's attempts to re-establish dominance over our world increase until it unleashes one of the greatest monsters of legend.

Catch up on all three, all available in paperback, in audiobook, and on Kindle. That way, you can be ready for the release of my own contribution, Witch Hunt, in which US Marines re-create the unit at the dawn of the Civil War under the direction of Lt Addison Greene. He knows nothing about being a marine, but everything about hunting monsters. Look for it in November.

Saving the best for last, check out the latest releases from Chris Kennedy Publishing:

The latest in the story of Abner Fortis of the International Space Marine Corps-

And the newest entry in the Murphy's Lawless series, following the Lost Soldiers of Charles Gannon's Caine Riordan universe-

Charles Gannon has declared that the Murphy's Lawless series will have great importance to the Caine Riordan storyline. Get caught up now!
