Coach Excellence Series Day 13: Zoning It Up This Season 🛡️

Nov 25, 2020 2:37 am

Coach ,

Continuing our email series, today we share some zone defense ideas and concepts from Coach Matt Cline of Eastern Michigan.

We mentioned yesterday in our email that coaches are expecting to play more zone defense this season due to the unpredictable nature of the season and being efficient with the limited practice time. During the beginning of the season over in Euroleague, Eurocup, and Champions League competition, more teams played zone than ever before as well.

For a majority of coaches, the 2-3 defense is one of the most popular zones to utilize.  Just look at the success of Syracuse using the 2-3 Zone and the coaches at all levels who have studied the defense.

Coach Cline’s 2-3 Zone Defense clinic covers the basics of the zone including

  • Guard Responsibilities
  • Forward and Center Responsibilities
  • BOB Rules for the Zone
  • Adjustments vs. various offensive attacks

In this clip, Coach Cline discusses how the defense reacts when the ball goes into the short corner.

As a coach who uses ball screens to attack zones, I really liked how Coach Cline covered the variety of ball screen actions teams have used against them in the past and how they will counter them with their zone.
