Coach Excellence Series Day 12: Attacking The Zone Effectively

Nov 23, 2020 11:43 pm

Coach ,

Continuing our email series, today we share some zone offense ideas and concepts from Coach Rob Lanier of Georgia State University.

As we talk to coaches across the country, one thing we are hearing is that coaches are expecting to play more zone defense this season due to the unpredictable nature of the season. So having principles and strategies to attack the zone from the first day will be crucial to your success.

Coach Lanier’s Zone Offense clinic covers a variety of strategies that coaches can use to attack zones such as

  • Transition Offense, even if you are not a fast breaking team.
  • Quick Hitters against Zone
  • Zone Continuities

In this clip, Coach Lanier shows a set he stole from current Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg to attack the zone.

For me, one of the best takeaways was when Coach Lanier talked about how to utilize the Horns alignment against zones with the basic Horns ball screen attack as well as utilizing the flare action from Horns.

Both actions are common against man to man, so knowing that you can use them against zone as well can be helpful this season due to limited preparation times.
