3 Pre-Season Practice Drills from Sixers Coach

Coach ,

Today, we are going to take a look at 3 drills from former NBA player and current Assistant Coach for the Sixers Coby Karl. What we want to focus on is being able to work on our decision-making in a fast-paced offense, create space and move the ball.

We also want to keep as many players engaged in our practice without having them sidelined, as we need them all engaged throughout the season and ready to jump in and play.

Let’s take a look at a few of the drills that Coach Karl used with his former G-League team South Bay Lakers.

The Blood Drill

This drill can be used early in our practice to help with our players' decision-making in a fast-paced offense. It not only helps us to learn how to play at a fast pace, but it’s also a great drill that can help our bigs to work on finishing. The whole key in this drill is for players to have the mindset of creating the disadvantage for defense through proper spacing.

Continuous Drive and Kick Drill

This is a great drill for teaching players how to attack the paint and also to develop passing skills on the drive. One of the most underrated things in terms of attacking the rim is being able to swing the ball quickly after the ball gets kicked out to the perimeter - this is where the offense can create the most momentum and shift defense off balance.

4 on 4 on 4

Last but definitely not least is the 4 on 4 on-4 Drill. We need our players to keep playing in practice and keep building their feel for the game. Sometimes we have players standing on the sideline waiting to be subbed in and missing on valuable reps. Coach Karl likes to use this drill because it keeps engaged as many players as possible and keeps them engaged in practice.

These drills are great to use year-round, however, it is important that we start working on our fundamentals early and our players know how to do these drills when the season is in full mode. Whenever our team hits a slump, one of the fastest ways to get back on track is to come back to doing fundamentals we are good at and build our momentum back up from there.

Thank you Coach Karl and the Basketball Immersion Pro Coach Clinic for sharing these great drills with us.

Always keep improving,
