3 Pick & Roll Sets for your Shooting Guard

Coach ,

As you know the Pick & Roll is the most used system in today's basketball at all levels and all over the world. Most of the teams play Pick & Roll systems more than 50% of the time.

The main Pick & Roll ball handlers and creators are Point Guards, but every team also needs a secondary ball handler who will create and make offense more versatile and effective. Therefore, Shooting Guards (SG’s) are backup options to play out of the Pick & Roll

Coaches usually try to find creative opportunities within an offense to get shots for their SG’s. Shooting guards mostly start the set without the ball in their hands, so it is necessary to use an entry screen, handoff or dribble handoff to put the ball in the hands of the shooting guard.

Here are 3 dynamic sets to get a shot opportunity for your SG from International, NBA & College Basketball:

#1 - Zip to Pick & Roll 25 via Fake P/R

The Zip to Pick and Roll 25 via Fake P/R is a really good set for teams that struggle defending multiple actions.

The action puts the helpside defense in a pickle because the play is designed to hit the short roll. Therefore, there will be 2 shooters on the backside resulting in the short roll man to have the option to hit one of the shooters with an open shot.

This action is one of 45 actions that Coach Luka Bassan studied when looking at international basketball teams that use the Pick and Roll Systems for a shooting guard.

#2 - Iverson Screen Single Tag

The Pick and Roll also is one of the most common actions in the NBA. Doc Rivers & the Philadelphia 76ers are a very good offensive team and are known to play heavily out of the pick and roll.

BHoops created a playbook for the 2020-2021 Philadelphia 76ers that contains quick hitters at every position.

The Iverson Screen Single Tag is a set that puts the defense at a disadvantage to take away a roll man but also get out to a shooter.

An Iverson action is when a team is in an 1-4 high alignment formation. The 2 wings loop under and over.

The play then consists of a screen for the ball handler to come off and make a play putting the defense into a pickle.

#3 - Chicago Action - Stagger

Loyola Chicago is fresh off a trip to the Sweet 16. They have been an offensive powerhouse for the last decade. Coach Jon DeMarco studied Loyola Chicago's offense and found that their success is no accident.

Loyola Chicago is known for their Chicago Action. The Chicago Action Stagger is an action that is tough to defend because it adds another player into the pick and roll.

This makes it harder to defend especially if a team does not switch. It has many wrinkles that can be used with this set.
