How the Pack line Defense can help you defend modern offenses

Coach ,
As your season begins you are exploring what you might want to do this season with the players you have.
Here are some questions to ask yourself about evaluating your defense.
Does your defense give you a chance to beat the best teams on your schedule?
Does it give you a chance to win on the road?
Does it protect against paint touches?
The Pack line defense does all of this. With most offenses playing positionless and emphasizing getting into the lane and ball screens, the pack line defense is a great defense to prevent teams from getting into the lane, and breaking down your defense.
Illinois under Coach Underwood has switched to it after being an up the line on the line defensive coach for many years.
Coach Boone Greensboro College Head Coach is a master teacher of the pack line.
Coach Boone shows how he uses the “hard show” technique to cover the side ball screen with the pack line defense.
If you have ever had a smaller team and have to defend against a post player the pack line is a good option to defend the post as well. Here is a great drill to work on your post-defense from Coach Jim Boone. I really like how he incorporates closeouts in this drill as well with 3 perimeter players 1 player inside.
This next drill from Coach Boone really works on defending against Drive and Kick teams. It’s a 5 on 4 disadvantage drill that works on helping and preventing the driver from getting paint touches. It also works on contesting and not allowing rhythm catch and shoot 3’s.
Our Coaches Clinic friend Coach Jim Boone is a master teacher of the pack line defense; he has a highly reviewed certification course that breaks the complete defense down for you.
Always be growing,
