Favorite Plays: The Argentina Flex

Coach ,

Over the years, we find that there are particular play actions or sets that become our favorites and end up in our playbooks consistently.

During my early years of studying international basketball, I found this particular action ran by the Argentina National team, coached by Ruben Magnano.  When  Magnano moved to Brazil as the national coach, he brought this action with him and the team continues to use it.  I have used it at the high school level and can also run it from the sideline.

Here is the basic pattern.

In this clip from the 2019 World Championships, Brazil starts in a Horns alignment and gets into the flex action by hitting the post and cutting off the opposite post.  What you will notice is that after the initial flex action, the ball is reversed and now you have a baseline double screen occur.  The ball is passed to Christiano Felicio on the post up.

In the second clip, the flex action starts and this time, Didi Louzada starts to come off the down screen but back cuts and gets a lob pass at the rim.

A nice counter for your best shooter.  In this clip, Vitor Benite looks like he is going to set the screen, but then comes off the baseline double for a wide-open look.

The spacing of the set at the end of the action allows for 2 man game to be played with the guard and post.  Here we have former NBA players Leandro Barbosa and Anderson Varejão playing pick and roll.

Here is a variation of the play that I ran with my high school team to get our best shooters (1 and 2) coming off the baseline screen and the down screen.
