Challenge Day 3: Learn how to Take Your Time in 3-Steps ⏰
May 24, 2023 2:06 pm
Hi ,
Hello and welcome to day 3 of your 5 Day Challenge to Stay Calm & Speak On!
Today you will learn why it's so important to slow down your speech and avoid filler words when doing public speaking.
I'll be teaching you the Take Your Time Speech Method, which will help you slow down your speech and avoid filler words.
Rushing through your words can actually make your anxiety worse and make it harder for your listeners to follow along.
But with this method, you'll be able to speak clearly, give yourself time to think, and deliver your message more effectively. By the end of this training, you'll be feeling more confident and in control of your public speaking.
So let's dive in and get started!
Read your lesson & watch the video I made for you here:
Take Your Time 3-Step Speech Method
1. 😮💨 Step One: Take deep breaths and pauses between your sentences.
This not only gives you time to collect your thoughts, but it also helps to regulate your breathing and calm your nerves. Try this out when you read aloud this speech introduction sample:
Hello! Thank you so much for being here with me today to explore how to overcome your fear of public speaking. My name is (your name) and I am so excited to share the 3 most helpful things you can do to feel better about speaking in front of an audience.
Read is aloud again, and this time take a short breath whenever you see the breath mark symbol (B):
Hello! (B) Thank you so much for being here with me today to explore how to overcome your fear of public speaking (B). My name is (your name), (B) and I am so excited to share the 3 most helpful things you can do (B) to feel better about speaking in front of an audience.
2. 🏹 Step Two: Be deliberate when you speak.
Practice getting to the key point of your idea by being concise, and giving yourself time to think clearly about what you are saying as you are saying it. Here are some examples:
Coffee Order Example:
"Good morning, Can I please have a cafe latte? Can you make that with oat milk? Can you make that a double shot?
Deliberate Order Example:
"Hello, I'd like a double shot cafe latte with Oat milk."
Call Example:
"I'm so sorry but I need to reschedule our lunch date today. I got behind at work and my cat woke me up too early this morning at 5 AM. I'm so sorry to cancel but I'm afraid I'll be bad company. When can we meet again?"
Deliberate Call Example:
"I need to reschedule our lunch plans for today. I was looking forward to seeing you but something has come up. Can you meet next Wednesday?"
3. ⌛ Step Three: Don't be afraid to take a moment to collect your thoughts before you speak:
- Take a deep belly breath before you respond.
- Take a pause when you are forming a new thought in between sentences.
- Think of the most important part of your thought and share that first.
- Avoid run-on sentences or monologues.
- Say one point at a time. That is enough.
Now you know the 3 steps to the "Take Your Time" Speech Method!
Let's Review:
- Step One: Take deep breaths in between your thoughts.
- Step Two: Practice speaking deliberately in your daily life.
- Step Three: Don't be afraid to pause and collect your thoughts.
When you practice these 3 steps regularly, you will feel more comfortable when you slow down your speech, avoid filler words, and feel more calm and confident whenever you speak.
With a little practice and patience, you will become a more calm and confident public speaker, one breath, and one thought, at a time.
