How do you feel ready to present?

Hello ,
Right before we give a high-stakes presentation, we tend to focus on the practical aspects: our slides, notes, and tech setup.
But it's equally important to take a moment to prepare mentally and emotionally before you speak.
We want to feel regulated and positive, not scattered and stressed. We want to feel present.
That's where a Pre-Talk Ritual helps you feel better.
We can take a page from athletes and public figures, who often have a "pre-game ritual" to help them feel ready to perform.
- Tennis player Serena Williams wears a pair of lucky socks (they seem to be working!).
- Actress Meryl Streep once slipped a love note into her shoe before performing on Broadway.
In my Love Your Voice Public Speaking Workbook for Women, I suggest a few categories to choose from for your pre-talk ritual:
- Your Favorite Mantra ( ex, "I've got this")
- Your Good Vibes Playlist (ex, "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan)
- Your Breath Exercise (e.g., Breath Cycles, Leaky Tire)
- Your Movement Exercise (e.g., Yoga, dance, walking)
- Your Speech Exercise (e.g., tongue twisters, lip trills)
- Your Calming Exercise (e.g., visualizations, aromatherapy)
- Your Vocal Health Plan (e.g., water, tea, vocal rest)
I personally love taking a short walk, stretching, or listening to my "Good Vibes" playlist the morning of a big presentation. When I'm backstage, I focus on centering breaths and positive visualizations.
What helps you feel positive and calm before presenting?
