Dear Stage Mom,
Happy Mother's Day! 👏 👏
I call you a "Stage Mom" lovingly because I know how much you do.
Besides doing all of the regular parenting work, you do a TON of "behind the curtain" work for your rising star performer child.
I see you! I appreciate you!
I appreciate my own Stage Mom, Jeannie O'Connor, who was and continues to be my biggest fan ever!
My Mom drove me to my play rehearsals in middle school, then to my musical, choir, and band rehearsals at Berkeley High School. She signed me up for drama & music camp at Cazadero & CSSSA, which changed the whole trajectory of my life. She encouraged me to apply to UCLA & NYU Theater school, even though it was a long shot, and I got in and went to UCLA!
She continued to support and encourage me throughout my young adulthood, in all of my "experimental" rock operas, bands, and musical projects. She applauded my performances, whether we had a great show or totally bombed. She took every single one of my headshots and tolerated my ever evolving fashion taste, mood swings, and weird musician life schedule.
She is also an artist and a teacher herself, so she modeled for me what it meant to be a good teacher, a devoted artist, and how to run your own business.
She showed me that you can be a good Mother and still be creative. She has also been an incredible Grandma "Gigi" to my own two sons, both of whom enjoy being out in nature more than on the stage so far.
So thank you Stage Moms, and all Stage Parents and guardians.
Let's give you a round of applause today for all of the "behind the scenes' magic that you make happen.
I hope you have a lovely day!
Bravo 👏 👏 👏,
Jessica
