When our cleaning roster didn't work

Hello ,

In the building where I live, we don't have someone who comes in and cleans the stairs. We work together to keep them clean. My two neighbours and I take turns (1) to do the area outside our doors and the stairs down to the next level of the building.

The man who has been there the longest writes the roster (2) for our little group at the beginning of each year.

This year, I saw he'd made a mistake at the start of the year. I cleaned on my week at the end of last year, but then it was my turn again two weeks later. However, after that, the pattern was correct, so I didn't say anything.

Going back a couple of weeks, it was my turn. I cleaned and made a note in my mind, so that I knew when it was my turn again.

Then, a week ago, I thought I should check the roster to make sure I had things right. I was shocked to see that it was my turn a week earlier than I thought. Something wasn't right!

I looked and saw that a weekend was split (3) between the end of last month and the beginning of this month. That was the problem. My neighbour had put one name on the Saturday (in the old month), and one on the Sunday (in the new month) of the same weekend!

No one said anything, so I prepared to clean at the time the roster said.

Then, on the morning of my weekend, I heard my neighbour start cleaning. Quickly, I picked up my copy of the roster and opened my door. I said it was my turn to clean and explained the problem.

He was surprised, but could see the mistake on the roster.

Some people would say I shouldn't have said anything. It might have been easier not to have said anything. Then I would have missed a turn, and the pattern would have started again.

Clearly, I'm too honest!

Do you have a cleaning roster in your building, ? If there was a mistake, would you say something, or would you keep quiet?

'Bye for now,

Andrea

(1) take turns - when everyone in a group does something, but one at a time. I have my turn, then the next person has their turn, etc.

(2) roster - 'list' that says when someone does something

(3) split - divided, in (usually two) parts
