The visitors I don't want in my flat

Some 'guests' should stay outside!

Dear ,

The problem with warm weather is wanting to keep the windows open for fresh air. It all sounds good; a cooling breeze blowing through my flat. And I like it - most of the time.

However, if I open the balcony door or any windows, there is a chance unwelcome visitors (1) will come in. Visitors with six legs and wings.

Generally, insects that enter our houses are harmless. But they can be annoying, especially if they start to fly around the room.

I don't like flies. In my mind, they want to check out my food, and where they land, they can leave germs (2). But I don't do anything special about them. I simply leave the windows open and hope that they leave.

Beetles (3) are nicer. If I find one inside, I feel sorry for it. I don't kill it; I catch it (that usually means I just carefully pick it up) and let it go outside.

Bees and wasps can sting, so I'm extra careful with them. I don't want to hurt bees; I want them to go outside to a flower or back to the hive (4). Wasps are more aggressive, so I want them gone as soon as possible! With bees and wasps, I carefully chase them outside.

I've had a couple of hornets inside. That scared me. I opened all the windows and hoped they left. Thankfully, they did, and everything was fine.

Moths (5) are a new problem. I've never really had moths inside before, but they love my current flat. At the end of last summer, I had way too many inside, and I started killing them.

This year I've seen a few, but not huge numbers, like I had last year. Nevertheless, I kill all the ones I can reach. So far I haven't climbed on something if they're near the top of a wall or on the ceiling.

I'll have to try putting lots of lavender or other things moths don't like in my place to keep them away.

How about you, ? Do you get insects in your house when you open the windows? What do you do about them?

Have a good (insect-free!) week,

Andrea

(1) unwelcome visitors - visitors we don't want

(2) germs - non-technical word for things like bacteria, that are so small we can't see them and cause diseases/health problems

(3) beetles - insects that can fly. They have hard pieces on their back that cover their wings.

 (4) hive - the place where bees live and make honey

(5) moth - an animal that looks like a butterfly, but flies around at night
