The question of a ten-year plan

Do I have one?

Hiya ,

Last week, someone asked me a question. I thought the answer was simple, but over the last few days, it seems more complicated.

The question was, "Do you have a plan for the future? A five- or ten-year plan?"

My answer was, "Not really."

But that doesn't mean I don't have a plan. Or maybe I don't have a plan, but I have an idea of what I'd like to happen, and if something different turns up, then I'll consider (1) it.

It's been that way all my life. I had an idea of what I wanted to do when I left school - something in the area of science. In our small town, I thought that would be working in a food factory, testing samples.

Instead, I got a job at the local high school, managing the science laboratories.

When I had been in that job for a couple of years, I started thinking about living somewhere else. Not forever, just for a couple of years (something which also changed). I applied for some volunteer (2) positions, but realised I needed a qualification.

When I had the chance to study, I did. For years! My main subject was science, but I also studied Indonesian. I wanted to live somewhere hot and tropical, and volunteering in Indonesia in a scientific job sounded great!

But somehow I ended up teaching English in Germany 😳. Germany wasn't part of my plan! Nevertheless, it's been an amazing adventure.

Now, as I look toward the future, I don't want to make a detailed plan. I have an idea of what I would like. That would be to have a slightly bigger flat in the area I live in, near Frankfurt, but not in it.

Will that happen? Will I retire where I live at the moment, or will I end up in a totally different part of the country (or world)!?

Who knows? But as with all the other twists and turns in my life, I'm sure the story will be interesting.

Do you have a plan for your life, ? Did you know what you wanted to do when you left school and work to make your dream come true? Or have you taken chances and ended up doing something very different to what you thought when you were younger?

I hope you have a week full of opportunites,

Andrea

(1) consider - think about (something)

(2) volunteer - if you volunteer, you do something willingly, often for free. In this case, I would have been paid the same amount as the local people in an undeveloped country.
