G'day ,
Last week it snowed. I think it was the most snow we've had in this area in 24 hours since I've been in Germany 😀.
Sorry, I still get excited when it snows - I think it looks so pretty when it's falling. And walking in soft, white snow is an amazing experience. Everything's so quiet and white!
At home on the farm, we sometimes had a bit of slushy (1), watery snow. The area wasn't a snow area, but we were up on a hill, just high enough for it to occasionally fall as snow and not rain, but still too warm for snow to really settle on the ground.
Except for once.
Before we went to bed, Dad told us that it was snowing. Even then, there was a thin layer of snow on the ground - not just the wet, slushy snow we usually had. But I thought that was as good as it would get. We just didn't get real, soft, powdery snow.
However, the next morning, our farm was completely white. It was amazing to look at. My first glimpse (2) was before the sun came up, with the whiteness of the snow highlighted against black shadows that were trees. Suddenly I had a picture of what European winters looked like.
My job at that time was to go out and milk a cow for milk for our family. By the time I went out, it was snowing again - heavy enough to make the farm buildings disappear. For people who live somewhere with lots of snow, that probably sounds boring. For me, who had never walked in falling snow before, it was magical! I milked the cow and fed her calf (3) and headed inside again.
Then the snow stopped falling. Because the air and ground temperature wasn't so cold, the snow soon started to melt. How sad!
Living here, I enjoy the times when it snows. But I'm glad we don't get a lot of snow. I agree, it makes things hard for a few days.
Do you like the snow, ? Or do you just think of how difficult it can be clearing the snow and staying safe?
Until next time,
Andrea
(1) slushy - partly ice and partly melted
(2) glimpse - a little look at something
