Dear ,
During my university studies, I sometimes worked until late at night to finish assignments (1). I have heard stories about students who stayed up all night to finish things, but that is something I never did.
Due to the jobs I've had, I've never had to stay at the office and work until late into the night. That's because my 'office' has been a school.
However, I had a colleague a long time ago who sometimes spent the night at work.
She was a teacher. When they found out, some of the other teachers laughed at her, and some thought she was crazy.
There was some logic to what she did. It wasn't because of the work she had to do, planning lessons and marking (2) homework. She could do that at home.
The problem was the driving time from her home to work. It was too long. Plus, the activities she wanted to do after school were in the town where the school was, not near her home.
You may think that a high school isn't a good place to sleep. I thought about it, and it could be a good option.
There's a bed. Usually only one, maybe two, in the sick room - the room where sick students wait while the school nurse contacts parents or doctors and ambulances.
In the sports area, there are showers. You need a towel and toiletries (3), but you can clean up for work after an early morning workout.
Want to prepare a gourmet (4) breakfast? Go to the cooking classrooms (kitchens) which have stoves, refrigerators, and other useful pieces of equipment. Just remember to bring your own food.
You really could live in a school. Do you feel like practicing the guitar or piano? Go to the music room. Or do you need to research something or read that book you saw advertised the other week? Relax in the library.
It wouldn't work long term (probably not even short term). But it would be possible - if you're a bit crazy!
Do you ever work late at night at the office? Have you ever slept at work? I'd love to hear your stories!
Have a restful week,
Andrea
(1) assignment - a word for 'homework' or a 'project' when you're at high school or university
(2) marking homework - correcting and giving a grade to homework
(3) toiletries - hygiene products like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, a toothbrush, deoderant etc.
(4) gourmet - high quality or expensive food, or food that is complicated/takes a long time to prepare
