A warm 'hello' on this wintery day, ,
Earlier in the year I wrote about the hot weather. So this week, let's talk about the cold temperatures we've been having.
Compared to some of the years I've been here, we're having a real winter this year! A bit of snow and temperatures of 0°C and below. Brrrr!
But that's OK. It's winter.
I don't enjoy it when we get cloudy, grey weather day after day. But so far, we have had some amazingly clear, sunny days to break up the cloudy grey ones. Super cold, but really sunny.
Despite the temperatures, I have still been for walks by the Main River. The other day, I did the first half and felt it was quite pleasant. The cold doesn't seem so bad when you keep moving.
Then I turned around to walk back - and it was a different story. The (light!) wind froze not only my face, but also my hands, which were deep in my pockets. Plus I had (fingerless) gloves on! In Tasmania we talk about the wind from Antarctica. I guess here it's the wind blowing straight from the Arctic (or maybe Siberia?).
However, that day, at least my hands could stay in my pockets. Another really cold day, I wanted to eat food at the Christmas Market. That was a challenge. As they got colder, it grew harder to make my fingers work. In fact, they started to hurt.
If I had wanted proof of how cold it was, I only needed to look at the river. Little white things were floating on top of the water. When I looked more closely at them, I realised they were small plates of ice.
One interesting thing about low temperatures like that - a small increase and the conditions feel so much warmer. When it goes back up to near zero, it hardly seems cold at all!
What are your experiences with low temperatures? Do you like extreme cold? What is the coldest you have been in? Let me know, because I expect it is worse than anything I have been in!
And that brings us to the end of the year! Thanks for reading 😊. I'm going to take a break until early January, so you'll hear from me again then.
Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a Great Start to the New Year.
Stay safe!
Andrea
