Am I turning into a hippie?

Chilly greetings ,

Tell me, are you the kind of person who has candles around the house. Not just for decoration, but to burn? I have never been that person.

A friend was into candles. She had some lovely ones and it made things easy when I needed to buy her a gift. There are some beautiful candle holders and a great range of candles available.

One of my sisters also has candles. When she is super stressed (not so often, now I guess, as she has retired - and she's younger than me 😯), she organises a room and some candles and spends some time in there, relaxing and de-stressing.

I couldn't see the point. That's not to say I didn't have candles in my flat back in Tasmania. They were simple, long white ones and I had cut one in half. I lit them occasionally - when we had a black-out (1).

That didn't happen often. More when I was younger and the electrical infrastructure wasn't as advanced. Less as our electricity company developed back-up systems.

I hadn't bought candles in Germany. If there had been a black-out I would have, so that I was ready for the next one.

Last year someone gave me a candle. I thought about using it (bought matches so that I could light it!), but then gave up on the idea and passed it on to someone who would enjoy it.

Then a few weeks ago I got serious and bought a couple of tea-light candles and a holder. I thought it would be a nice way to relax on Friday evenings, without using so many lights (plus, it's Christmas time and here that involves lots of candles). Not knowing what I had done, a friend then gave me a couple of taller, fatter candles.

So a couple of nights ago, I lit a candle 🕯️ and listened to podcasts. And I really enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to doing it regularly. Which means I'll need to buy more candles. Am I turning into a hippie?

Do you burn candles? Regularly throughout the year, or is it a Christmas thing? Tell me your thoughts on candles or people who burn candles. All you have to do is hit 'Reply' and start writing...

Keep warm,

Andrea

(1) black-out - when all the electricity in the street or neighbourhood (or city!) goes off.
