I broke the rules in the supermarket 😳

I couldn't reach the milk!

Dear ,

I was in the supermarket.

There was some of the milk I buy on the top shelf. It was tricky - I had to reach over near the back of the shelf to get a carton (1), but I managed.

After thinking about it, I decided I wouldn't get milk that day. I didn't think I'd use any for a few days. The supermarket would probably have new stock (2) on the shelves when I needed it.

The next day I changed my mind (3) - the best idea was to buy some. I went back to the supermarket.

Oh no! I couldn't see any of the milk I buy! They hadn't restocked, and the cartons I had seen the afternoon before were gone.

My first thought: go to another supermarket.

No, that was silly - I'd just get another type of milk...

I looked at the cartons again to make sure there wasn't some hiding somewhere. ... The carton over the very back of the shelf might be what I was after.

Now I'm reasonably tall. I'm not 180 cm like I hoped I would be, but I'm not many centimetres less than that. Several times I've had people (usually older ladies) ask me to get something off a high shelf for them.

I reached to get the milk carton.

No go. I could touch it, but that was all.

I had a heavy bag on my shoulder, so I put it down, hoping I'd be able to stretch a little more.

Still no success.

Help! A shop assistant?

There wasn't one to be seen.

Climb on the fridge? That felt so wrong.

I looked around again. OK, let's do this.

After checking how solid (4) the bottom part of the fridge was, I stepped onto it. That gave me the extra centimetres I needed.

I quickly grabbed the carton and stood back down on the ground, where I could take a good look at it.

Yay! It was the milk I buy.

Feeling very pleased with myself, I headed to the check-out.

Was I 'bad' to climb onto the bottom part of the fridge to get the milk? Should I have looked for an assistant? Have you ever done the same thing - climbed on something in a shop to get the item you wanted. I'd love to hear your stories!

Have a fantastic week,

Andrea

(1) carton - a container made of thick 'paper', usually with four sides. Used to hold fruit juices, milk and cream.

(2) stock - supplies

(3) change your mind - cancel the decision you've made and select a different choice

(4) solid - hard, stable
