Changing a light bulb (1) is easy, right...?

I had to ask for help 🫣

G'day ,

A week ago, I noticed that in the light in my living room, only one bulb was working.

Changing a light bulb isn't hard. You don't need any special knowledge, skill, or equipment. I've changed heaps of bulbs - lots as part of my former job (2) and a few at home.

I climbed up to get one of the bulbs out so that I knew what to buy. But it wasn't easy - I learned they aren't 'normal' globes. However, I knew basically what I needed.

At the hardware store, I found the right thing - um, the right shape. Before I purchased, I checked I could return it if it was wrong.

Then I had to ask the Hausmeister for help. I felt really uncomfortable because changing a bulb is so easy!!

He came with a ladder (3) and two screwdrivers (4).

But it wasn't easy - it was hard work.  He had trouble getting the globes out.

And even more trouble getting the new one in!

He decided to take the whole thing off the ceiling (5). One problem - he needed a different screwdriver.

I was standing on a chair, holding the light fitting because it was still connected to the ceiling by one wire. Leaving me, he went out to get what he needed.

Please door - don't lock behind him!

He arrived back a few minutes later and quickly undid the last screw and I was free to get down from the chair.

Then he worked at getting the other old bulb out and new ones in (he had a couple of extras). To do that, he undid more parts.

With the bulbs in, we got in place to put the whole thing back up. First, he connected all the wires, then we tested it. All three bulbs came on. Yay - we were winning!

The next step was to screw it to the ceiling.

Done.

This week I'm going to buy a new light. One where I don't need special equipment - or help - to change the bulbs!

How are you with fixing easy things around the house, like changing a light bulb? Have you ever had a crazy experience like this?

May all your lights shine brightly (and be easy to change!).

Until next time,

Andrea

(1) bulb (or globe) - the thing that gives light when it is connected to electricity

(2) former job - the one I had before the job I have now

(3) ladder - a wooden or metal set of 'stairs' that you can go up to reach places high above the ground

(4) screwdrivers - the tool/thing we use to 'put' the screw into place. You fit the end of the screwdriver into the top of the screw and turn it around and around.

(5) ceiling - 'top' of a room
