Hello ,
Last weekend was a public holiday (1) here in Germany. It was a long weekend, and most shops were closed on Sunday (like always) and also on Monday. If you needed food or other items, you had to buy them by Saturday.
I didn't think things through very well last week. My plan was to cook something for dinner on Monday, because I would have the time. I like cooking dinner for myself. The problem is being home to do it.
At the end of last week, I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries. Although I thought I would have another opportunity, while I was in the shop, I decided to get the things I needed for Monday. As I walked home with the ingredients in my shopping bag, I realised I had just avoided (2) a big mistake - that was my last visit to a supermarket before everything closed.
So dinner was under control, but I knew I needed bread, too.
Bakeries don't follow the same opening times as other shops. Most of them open on Sunday, and in big cities you can usually find one or two open on a public holiday. As I live in a small town, I didn't think any of my local bakeries would be open on Monday. But I thought the one I usually go to would be open on Sunday. So I left buying bread until then.
Sunday afternoon, I walked to the bakery - and was totally shocked to find it closed. It had been closed all day! I was stunned. Three elderly (3) ladies were sitting outside the bakery. They confirmed (4) that it was closed. Then one of them added that the other bakery, about 200 m away was open. In my shock, I'd forgotten about that one. I was glad she reminded me!
Thankfully, she was right. They didn't have many things left, but I was able to buy what I needed. As I walked home, I felt relieved (5) that in the end my trip had been a success.
I hope you planned well for th long weekend, . Have you ever not bought things you need for a day when the shops were closed? What did you do?
Enjoy the sunshine,
Andrea
(1) public holiday - a day when (most) businesses close and people have a free day
(2) avoided - escaped from, 'missed out', but in a positive way
(3) elderly - another (polite!) way of saying 'old'
(4) confirmed - removed doubt about what I could see, that it was closed. Hotels confirm your booking when you make a reservation. They send a message that (hopefully!!) removes doubt about you having a booking, and the information (dates and type of room) that you asked for.
(5) relieved - relaxed and happy after feeling scared or worried
