How do you choose a hotel, {{contact.first_name}}?

G'day ,

We are now well into the New Year and I wonder - have you planned any of your holidays for the year yet?

Holidays. Travel. Time away from home. Choosing where to go can be tricky, but once you have decided there is then the question about where to stay.

Over the years, I have stayed in a lot of hotels. I don't usually book an expensive hotel - I'd rather spend the money on experiences (or shopping!) wherever I am. But I have a few 'musts' for where I stay.

The first thing I look at is the location of the hotel in the place I am visiting. I prefer somewhere that is central, so I can walk to the things I want to see. Oh, and the area around the hotel should 'feel' safe. Having said that, I stayed in hotels around the Main Train Station in Frankfurt for the first few weeks I was in Germany and it wasn't so bad... (interesting, but not 'bad').

The hotel doesn't need to be luxurious, although I must confess that I have stayed in a couple of 4-5 star places. More importantly it should be clean!

I don't need so many features in the room. A safe for valuables (1) and a mini-bar aren't so important. But my own bathroom definitely is! And, depending where you are, hot water is nice (it definitely wasn't good having a cold shower in Rome, but it was OK having no hot water in Indonesia).

I'm not a hostel person. Well, not if I have to sleep in a dormitory (2). I have actually stayed in a couple of hostels (and enjoyed the experience), but in my own room with my own bathroom. (Note - from my experience, hostels do great buffet breakfasts!)

I think the nicest hotel I have stayed in was a 4-star place in Indonesia. The interior was amazing, plus it had a beautiful garden (with a swimming pool). It was a refreshing oasis in the middle of the city.

So, may I ask, what is important when you choose a hotel, ? Location? The star rating of the hotel? Something else? Feel free to write and tell me. Also, what is the nicest hotel you have stayed in?

Have a good week (and happy travel-planning 😉),

Andrea

(1) valuables - expensive things (e.g. jewellery), also money and important documents (like passports)

(2) dormitory - a room for sleeping with a number (4 or more?) of beds in it
