A guy stopped me in the street...

Hello, hello, hello, ,

Do random people on the street start talking to you?

A few years ago I remember sitting in a shopping centre. An elderly (1) lady sat down next to me and started talking. First it was about her neighbour. I listened politely (2), thankful I didn't need to say anything (she was talking in German). But I found it sad - didn't she have family or friends to talk to?

She moved from what she was saying about her neighbour to things that happened during the War. And she just kept talking, in her own little world. It felt rude for me to get up and leave, but it was difficult for me to break in and say that I had to go. However I finally did - I needed to get to my next class.

Then earlier this year I was in line, waiting for the Post Office to open. A lady asked about the time and I answered. And she, too, kept talking. I politely nodded and turned back around in line.

Next thing, she stepped forward, touched my arm to get my attention and said something else. In fact, she did that a couple of times! And her story also was also about the War (although I didn't think she looked that old!).

I didn't feel as sad for this lady. Actually I was annoyed (3) that she kept tapping (4) my arm!

Last week I was walking through Bockenheim when an elderly gentleman stopped me. No, it wasn't a War story - he wanted to give me some advice.

I was walking with my hands in the pockets of my coat (like I always do in winter). But he pointed out how dangerous that is. If I fell, I wouldn't have time to get my hands out of my pockets - I would hit the ground face first 🤕.

As he spoke, I took my hands out of my pockets and tried to keep them out as I walked home. But that is tricky until the weather gets warmer!

Do you have any stories to tell of people who have spoken to you on the street? Has anyone given you some advice? Share any interesting moments by hitting 'Reply'. I read (and reply!) to all comments!

Good bye for now - catch you again next week 😀

(2) politely - acting 'nicely' or 'properly'. With good manners.

(3) annoyed - a little bit angry/mad

(4) tapping - hitting, but lightly or gently
