🛵 Fav Helmet? <& Rich's scooter accident>

Apr 23, 2022 2:01 pm

Hey, !

I planned to talk helmets, and then Rich was in a scooter accident. That info is at the bottom. I don't get graphic. It's a leg-only injury, but if that freaks you out, skip it. 🛵❤️

Helmet Chat

I get a lot of questions through email, Instagram, AND YouTube. Lately, the questions are gear related - mainly helmets.

What helmet do you think is the most popular among those that I chat with?

Full? 3/4? Half? None?

The 3/4!

Coincidentally, the guy that bought the Kymco Like was a YouTube subscriber, and he rode the line of being embarrassed when he came over to test ride with a used & abused half helmet. He thought I'd lecture.

Dude. I'm just happy you wear a helmet! Now, the used & abused part, let's talk about...

The average helmet supposedly lasts a 5 year blip of time. Read more about that here. That assumes you don't hang it on your handlebar or on your scooter seat (& presumably falls). (🤫I'm calling you out repeat offender that tells me this....🤣)

I keep my fav gear listed updated here, and I am toying with the idea of researching a fav 3/4. I've just been so committed to a full-face that I struggle here!

Rich's Scooter Accident

Rich (husband) was in a scooter accident just over a week ago on the Kymco AK550.

Here's a riddle. How do you have a scooter accident without hurting the scooter?

His giant work boot clipped the ground in what I'm calling an aggressive turn. That's it. No other snafu.

He kept riding, realized he was hurting, figured out his bluetooth helmet thing to call me, and I met him at the ER.

He caught a ride to the entrance from a good Samaritan <he was trying to hop from the parking lot🤦‍♀️>. I showed up. He was in gear.

You have no idea how relieved I was to be carrying his gear as he moved from room to room to get assessed, poked, and prodded.

He wasn't a gear guy, but I talked him into wearing gear now that he is a daily commuter (on interstates). He has all sorts of issues with his lower leg/ankle area. It's ugly. BUT I was relieved that he was otherwise ok, & he was geared up.

Seriously. That made me feel better about our choice to adopt scooters as our primary transportation to know that he is doing what he can to be safe. That's all we can do. Well. And be careful. <To be semi-fair, my boots barely fit within the platform of the AK550, and I've got skinny feet.>

With all of that, he's still injured. He has at least 1 surgery if not 2 in his future, & he's in a wait & see point before we KNOW what's next. He now is hanging out with feet propped up. But he's just navigating the medical care, work requirements, and the work disability requirements. It's not glamourous.

I rode his beloved AK550 home, and I'm still on my Vespa. He plans to ride when he's back to 'normal'. So please know that I'm not trying to freak you out from your own rides. I simply share what I learn, and we're now in a new phase of my education it seems!

I'll provide updates if you're interested, but please wear gear (helmet, gloves & sturdy shoes at a minimum). Have insurance. And be safe.

Be seen & be safe, scooter friend! ♥

Take care,

~Renee (aka Scooter Newbie)
