🛵 How to get the most out of your helmet

Hey there, my fav scooterist!

I don’t think I’ve shared why I talk about helmets so much.

My first ‘real’ relationship almost didn’t happen because he was in a motorcycle accident. 💔 He wore a helmet, but he was beat up. He didn’t wear gear beyond the helmet, and I didn't see him for a couple of months while he healed.

Fast forward a bit, and I had a family member that was a nurse 👩‍⚕️ that dealt specifically with brain injuries. I remember her talking about what had many of those patients there - riding but even more concerning - without a helmet.

My details are fuzzy because both are from a time that I didn’t ride (which means it didn’t apply to me) & both are from many years ago.

Fast forward to right before I started riding, and I had a front row seat to a tragic motorcycle accident without a helmet. I always hated that spot on the freeway, and now I hate it more.

Life experiences shape how we approach the next steps in our journey, so when I started riding, wearing a helmet was a non-negotiable thing for me. It still is.

Good rule of thumb - replace it every 5 years or after any drops

If you’re not sure, I go into detail in this article. Give it a read if you’re uncertain.

Also - don’t set it on your scooter seat (that drop is enough to be a problem) & don’t store it in direct sunlight. More on storing your helmet here

If you’re looking for an upgrade, I’m a big fan of Revzilla’s prices and selection (affiliate link). They are affiliated with Cycle Gear if you prefer to shop in-store, but any motorcycle gear spot will work. Just wear one, please!

Have an awesome & SAFE week! 💞

Take care,

~Renee (aka Scooter Newbie)

PS - Even bicyclists that are going 20-45 mph wear helmets. Please wear yours. Subscribers that I’ve met apologize for their helmets. As long as it is a motorcycle helmet, I won’t criticize you!
