Text EN

Belgian explorer and adventurer Louis-Philippe Loncke (44) has just achieved his 13th world first by becoming the first person in the world to trek the Kungsleden in complete autonomy and without outside assistance.

The Kungsleden (The King’s trail) is Sweden's best known long-distance hike and is located in Lapland, largely north of the Arctic Circle.

The world record was validated on the evening of Friday 3 September by the FKT website (see links)

He crossed the Kungsleden from Hemavan to Abisko in 19 days, leaving with a 31 kg backpack containing food, batteries, equipment such as crampons and, above all, a boat (an inflatable packraft and a paddle) which enabled him to cross the 7 lakes on the route without using ferries or motorised taxi boats.

The Kungsleden is full of big wild animals such as reindeer, elk, polar fox, wolverines and little chance of encountering bears. The small difficulties come from mosquitoes, muddy terrain in rainy weather, the probability of snow in the summer and negative temperatures.

On this 4th of September 2021, it is exactly 15 years since Louis-Philippe Loncke started his very first expedition in Australia.

Louis-Philippe Loncke filmed himself with a GoPro during the expedition and plans to produce a film and give lectures.

Anecdotes

·       On the 8th day he tore his left calf muscle. He decided not to move for 40 hours and slowly resumed the trek on the 10th day with some pain but a stable injury until the end of the expedition.

·       At the 6th lake to be crossed, the wind was too intense with 10m/s and peaks at 14m/s. Too dangerous for a packraft he decided to wait for the wind to stop and crossed the lake the next day.

·       When he arrived at the South summit of the Kebnekaise, he saw the deadly ridge that leads to the Northern summit (the highest point in Sweden), he decided to go alone without an ice axe and climb the 650m separating the two summits twice (go and return). "If you fall to the right or to the left, it's death. The weather, wind and ice conditions on the glacier were very good and the probability of falling was almost zero.
