When Efficiency Isn't The Point

Apr 28, 2021 8:47 pm

Hey there,

Thanks for joining me. Happy to report that my exams are over and so I've graduated all but in name. I'm looking forward to rebuilding my writing habit so I can continue giving you guys stuff that you like to read.

Now on to what you came for.

An Article I Wrote

When Efficiency Isn't The Point - I've always been interested in efficiency, but I've realised over the years that it's not the only thing we should care about. It's way shorter than what I usually write, so let me know if this is something you like (or don't like). Either way, I'd love to hear from you.

Interesting Things I've Found

The Desire Chamber: If an echo chamber is a place where people repeat the same thing, a desire chamber is a place where everybody wants the same thing. This is what Luke Burgis thinks is happening right now because in 2021, everyone is our neighbour. We now want the same thing, and if you ask Rene Girard, that's bound to lead to disaster. Fascinating stuff.

Coinbase Job Description: You've probably heard of Coinbase by now, but you might not have seen this post on HackerNews by Brian Armstrong recruiting a co-founder to help him launch the site. What's fascinating isn't just how the idea evolved, but how people reacted. It's a good reminder that we shouldn't let other people talk us out of an idea we're certain about.

Decoding The Sign: I'll end off with some pithy wisdom from Seth Godin. When you see a sign, make sure you know what it's for. When you make a sign, make sure you know who it's for.

This Week's Sponsor

Blinkist - If you haven't checked out Blinkist yet, sign up for a free trial. It's a great tool for getting summaries of non-fiction books and for sifting out whether a book is worth reading or just fluff. They're running a 40% off sale for yearly subscriptions up till 30 April 2021, so check it out and see if it's your thing.

A Quote I'm Pondering

"If one only wished to be happy, this could be easily accomplished; but we wish to be happier than other people, and this is always difficult, for we believe others to be happier than they are." - Montesquieu

As usual, let me know what you think.
