Hi !
It's January. The month of goal setting and resolutions. But actually, I think for a lot of us, it's the month when burnout finally catches up to you.
For me, the combo of holiday planning, shopping (even online! You gotta track everything and order around supply chain issues), traveling, and visiting family and friends PLUS my day job ramping up for year-end and start-of-year presentations* just destroys all my will to care about anything but TV show binging. Come January, I vehemently "just don't wanna."
This year, I bemoaned that the new year starts early winter. Shouldn't it actually start on the spring equinox, you know, during the season of renewal? It's all very illogical—but also an intriguing world building idea! I'm thinking post the post-apocalyptic future, when culture is something whole again and things like calendars matter. Instead of January 1st, they'd make the new year start at a different point in the Earth's rotation around the sun. A year is still a single solar rotation regardless of the start date, after all.

So, is all this to say I'm goal-less and burrowed in blankets until March?
Well, a little bit of me wishes it were so! But no, I'm way too ambitious for that. This solar rotation, I've set habit goals into my three core pillars: Health, Author Business, and Day Job (aka, what pays the bills). Priority #1 this year is health. With the pandemic, I've suffered way more stress than I realized (who didn't?) so I'm putting my health first. Once those new habits are formed and normalized, I'm onto Author Business!
And actually, I've already begun. This newsletter, for example, 100% one of my goals. I'm also reading more SciFi and Fantasy books, including Jade City by Fonda Lee. I'm in the final third of it right now! But you probably care most about my writing goals...
That's good because my big plans are to write, write, write! I'm hoping to finish the novel I started last year and also publish two short stories—at the minimum. Since you're on my newsletter, you'll hear all about it first :)
I am also very excited for what's possible this year. So much exploring and creating of worlds and characters. I can't wait to introduce you to Callisto Station and all its peculiar inhabitants.
Let me know how your January is going, , and what's exciting you the most right now—even if it's curling up with hot cocoa and Geralt of Rivia (heck, especially if it's that!).
Until the next one,
Lorena
*in case you wondered where I went for December!
