Dear ,

Thanks again for all the love on the cover reveal! Today I wanted to share something a little more personal: why I wrote The Cost of Magic.

When I finished The Discovery of Magic, I couldn’t stop thinking about one character: Torvia.

imageShe’s such a capable young woman in a fascinating position, and I kept wondering - how did she become a spy in one of the most powerful and ambitious kingdoms?

In The Discovery of Magic, we only see her actions. She’s not one to let on what she’s thinking. The Cost of Magic opens a window into her life - and it turned out to be far more complex than I imagined. Not only does she juggle a dangerous role, advanced magic, and demanding royals, but she’s also survived a difficult upbringing.

This book also gave me the chance to show the rising tension between North and South from the inside. Torvia starts off naïve to just how deep it runs - but by the end, she not only understands the web of plots around her - she’s a key player in it.

I can’t wait for you to read it.

Next time, I’ll properly introduce you to fifteen-year-old Torvia - and share an except that shows who she is.

Until then,

Happy reading,
