A Birthday Black Duck
It was my birthday recently. We went for a lovely walk down the local Millennium Trail. It's a wooded walk following the route of a railway line north of Heathfield, disused since 1968.
There are deep railway cuttings, high embankments and a 15m high railway bridge with old telegraph poles along the route.
I got chatted by not one but two older men!
The first was tottering along slowly with his wife and within seconds he'd told me he'd had a stroke. and so had his wife, that it was on Christmas Day and they were both still recovering. He had a naughty twinkle and clearly wanted to chat. So we stopped and chatted for a bit. When I told him it was my birthday and we were going to the pub for lunch, he practically hyper ventilated!
Then a bit further on, we were passing under the bridge when a chap on a mobility scooter randomly told me how he'd not seen the bridge for years and then told me all about his mobility scooter
When we returned to the car park, I was admiring a beautiful pale blue Jaguar with a number plate that ended in JAG. As we were standing there admiring it, the owner arrived back, told us Hugo (the car) was not for sale, that she'd bought him from new with her payoff from British Airways, all about her job, that she lived on her own, that she was living comfortably because she had a lot of ISA's and on
I enjoy random conversations like those, but I must have had a 'talk to me' label on that day!
Then off to The Black Duck for lunch in the garden from where we watched a herd of deer cross into a field and lounge underneath a large tree. It's one of my favourite places and I had a squid starter, a main of cassoulet with quail and even found room for a lemon tart and a decaff flat white. Everything was gorgeous, as usual. If you ever find yourself in the vicinity, do give it a go, it's a great place
A Birthday Greek
A few days before, my daughter had taken me to Pilio's a fantastic Greek bistro run by a Greek couple. You can even buy olive oil from the Greek village they left to come and live in East Sussex. We shared a gorgeous beetroot starter and I had a spicy sausage casserole type dish that was deep and very very flavoursome. No room for pud this time
Sadly, we were the only customers for the entire time we were there. When we left, I thought there was another customer sitting out the front, but no, it was Thanasis, co-owner and chef
I'm worried for them, how on earth can you keep going like that?
Flowers
I had some beautiful birthday flowers from both my girls and a card that sprung open and made me give a little shriek!
New Toys
I've splashed out on a new MAC computer. A desktop one. I'm intending to start doing some YouTube videos and iMovie is the easiest way to edit them. Not that that was the only reason to get one, but it was definitely a want, not a need
I worked in IT for a living, so I like this kind of thing and I'm enjoying learning about the little differences between the MAC and the Windows 10 laptop. Watch this space!
I feel thoroughly birthdayed, and it's our anniversary soon, so we'll be doing something similar for that!
In the meantime, here's a couple of recent posts from Thrifty Lesley
Punjabi Cabbage
This is a Northern Indian cabbage recipe, packed full of vegetables, pulses and spices. Make it hot if you like things that way. Personally, I like a lot of spice and hardly any heat

Cheesy Jacket Potatoes
Jacket potatoes filled with cheese are one of the most popular ways to eat a baked potato. This is scarcely a recipe, but I wrote it anyway!

Baked Apple Sponge
I did a sponge pudding for my husband a while ago. He went for seconds, so it worked well, even tho I cooked it in the microwave and it looked a bit pasty. Apologies for the titchy image

Broccoli & Almond Stuffed Pancakes
I made these this week and they worked really well. I'm writing up the recipe, so keep your eyes peeled for that
Next Weeks Meal Plan
This is my meal plan for the week 10th August 2020. Nothing fancy, just home cooking. Still haven't got to have a lasagna! We're going grocery shopping tomorrow and Mike is already talking about having lunch out! I've got a couple of interesting new recipes I'd really like to try out this week, so if necessary, I'll shuffle things about
