What's been happening
On August Bank Holiday Monday, Heathfield has an Anglo/French market. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day this year - not always the case!
We had music all day from the stage from talented local musicians, and entertainment up and down the High Street and in both of the churches in that road. There was an art exhibition in one of the churches too
Heathfield is twinned with Forges-les-Eaux, a town in Normandy, France. This partnership was formalized in May 1998, following the success of Heathfield's first French Street Market, "Le Marché," and promotes cultural, sporting, and educational exchanges between the two towns.
It might be a small market town, but there is plenty to do here, and the people are smashing!
We read Shy Creatures at Book Group this month. We all loved it! We had a great discussion, which led to all sorts of other things, as it always does!
One of the members questioned the use of cliche and quoted research she had done using AI, comparing it to Jane Austen and her use of cliche, but ironically. She implied that Clare Chambers was an inferior writer because of this. This led me to try all kinds of queries once I'd got home and what an interesting half hour that was!
One thing I did was getting ChatGPT to compare and contrast the use of cliche in Shy Creatures and Sense and Sensibility. It was really interesting and thought provoking reading!
On Friday, we all bundled into the car and went off to the chiropractor, again, and then to Sovereign Harbour for a walk around and a look at the shops. Just looking.
It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm, without being too hot. We met up with my daughter for a coffee, and my grand daughter and Mike had big dishes of ice cream, DGD had a bright blue one - bubblegum flavour. Not one I fancy, at all!
Other people had slices of bread that they were feeding the harbour fish with - beautiful, and enormous, sleek grey mullet.
The seagulls joined in after a while. There were lots of teenager gulls that were mercilessly pecked by the adults in their mutual quest to get to the bread!
The Historical Inns u3a group went off to the Squirrel Inn, Battle for this months lunch. I had liver and bacon this time, something I rarely get at home as neither of the other two can stand it. We used to have it fairly often when I was growing up as it was a cheap source of meat - still is!
The third weekly meal plan for the whole week - all three meals, plus snacks
And here we have our Third Meal Plan. Based around chorizo/salami, chick peas and, of all things, dried mashed potato. Bear with me here, this idea is from Miss South on NorthSouthFood.com. Miss South is quite a potato connoisseur, so if she likes them, that was a good place to start from for me. I have made all the recipes, and I can assure you, both the gnocchi and the farl are wonderful.
I have been busy re-pricing the meal plans and I'm over the moon that they are still working out really well! Do have a peek and see what you think
Chicken and sun-dried tomato sandwich paste
A versatile sandwich filler, made in moments. Use it in sandwiches, wraps and on toast, on jacket potatoes or with pasta too.
What to do with leftover bread
Bread is the most wasted food item. WRAP says that 240 million slices are thrown away every year. I find that such a huge number, that I had to break it down to something that I could visualise.
Store it in the freezer, just taking out what you need at any one time; make breadcrumbs (very useful!); or use it in one of these lovely recipe ideas
That's it for now, have a great week and I'll see you soon!
Do come and say hello on the Fantastically Frugal Food Facebook group, or the Sensational Slimming Sustenance group. I'd love to see you. Lots of useful tips, recipes and ideas. The nearly 19,000 membership are brilliant, brimming with talent.
And don't forget Thrifty Lesley, where there are 800+ recipes of fantastically frugal food and many weekly meal plans. And Cheap Family Recipes where you can find all kinds of delicious things that don't cost much, with two family monthly meal plans.
With all best wishes, until next time
