A lesson in running a business

Good afternoon, . Here is a great story from Larry himself.

It was a hot Friday afternoon, and I just finished my tutoring. Feeling extremely confused and tired from the 2-and-a-half-hour class, I went on as I did my homework. That was when I realized that my lawn mower was still at the repair shop, and that I needed to get it before they closed. But the thing was, they closed at 5 and it was already 4:30! Me and my dad rushed to go to the store, but by then it was already 4:50 and I had forgotten my debit card! By the time we had got there, it was 5:05, and the backdoor where owners dropped off their lawn mowers was locked, so I rushed to the front entrance and miraculously, it flew open. Same thing with the second door leading to the backroom. I took my lawn mower with me and that's when Eric, the owner, came to the scene. My dad was there by then as well, and Eric had already begun to calculate the costs of the repair. A week ago when I had dropped off my lawn mower, I upfront paid $200 for the repairs, but the total repairs rounded up to $235! I knew I couldn't pay off the money since I had forgotten my debit card (I don't have a credit card either), but I couldn't have my dad pay for the expenses. Eric could have easily made me pay for those additional costs (which I hadn't requested), but instead he cut them off, leaving me with $213.67 left, but then he cut off the additional $13, and even the 67 cents! And when we tested the lawn mower outside (Eric even helped me start the lawn mower up and told me that the gas was turned off), it was good as new and in excellent condition!

My dad then told Eric that when he was inside the store, he noticed the store’s logo which stated that it had been running since 1966, and asked Eric if that was the year the business started. Eric then began to tell us his story about how his father came to Canada from Holland in 1953 with only $60, and how he had developed the shop by himself while raising 5 children including Eric (the shop itself is also family owned, employing members of the family). It was a story that deeply moved both of us, and Eric even gave me a nice blue hat! When we left the shop, we were not only relieved that things eventually went to plan, but also greatly inspired and learned a big lesson on how to treat customers like family.
