The Catch-22 of Summer for Authors & Readers

Summer has this image to maintain which basically boils down to one word... FREEDOM!!!!
Freedom from school. Freedom from work (aka - vacations). Freedom from all the things we get caught up from fall thru spring (work, school, obligations).
It's a time for us to spread our wings and fly! Rest and relax! Even if we only really get 3 days to 1 week of vacation from our jobs - summer is still the FUN season.
Right?
Well, I can say that my kids are out there living their best lives over the summer. And I don't begrudge them the fun and freedom! I had that once too.
Every year by August, I'm more than ready to throw my kids back into school and try to get some semblance of a grasp on my own life, work, etc.
This year, not so much, as (in August) we still have to squeeze in a vacation, come home, throw clothes in the laundry, repack, and head west to drop my middle child off in Montana (we live on the east coast). While most of my kids have gone to the beach at least once this summer with friends, spent days/nights hanging out and having fun, I've been doing the mom/wife/author shuffle.
Preparing middle child to go off to school across the country; helping the next child in line with college applications and college tours; helping the youngest prepare for the SAT coming up; taking care of my elderly mom; editing, editing, and editing for myself and others; and somehow getting two manuscripts to the finish line--THAT has been my summer thus far. Somehow I managed to squeeze in a weekend book signing at probably the most haunted hotel I've ever stayed at (and that is saying a lot!)
Not complaining... it's all part of this crazy life I signed up for... I'm just exhausted! And disappointed that I haven't put a bigger dent in my TBR pile this summer--which just got bigger after I bought so many more books at the Romance in the Carolinas book signing I went to over the weekend. I need time to READ!

So instead of New Years resolution, I'm going with a Fall into Fall Resolution - when the kids are back in school, I am taking my own staycation and reading all the books I didn't get to over the summer.
