Monthly Book Review

Aug 19, 2025 1:31 pm

I like to use my platform to help promote others. Usually I'll dedicate one newsletter per month to this where I recommend 2-3 books, but rarely a full blown review. I've chosen to correct this injustice and start showcasing full reviews for at least 1 book/author on a monthly basis.

Last month, I reviewed the Glimmer Lake series by Elizabeth Hunter. Suddenly Psychic hit me with all the feels and I thoroughly enjoyed the series. I believe before that was Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter Mysteries series which was so much fun. So along the same vein, I've decided to read and review Obsidian by one of my all time favorite authors, KF Breene. Seriously, she's my idol when it comes to fun, freakishly fun, steamy, and chaotic good times fantasy fiction.

Review for Obsidian by KF Breene

5 STARS (would give it 10 if that was the typical ranking classification)

KF Breene is the master of romantasy fiction. She is one author I will not even bother reading the blurb because I am going to buy it no matter what.

The story is fun with lots of action and adventure, as well as plenty of spicy times.

Somehow the author makes even instant-lust believable and the scenes natural and authentic. The chemistry between Daisy and her fae suitor, Tarian, is off the charts. For a simple "chester" in a magical world and a fae from another realm, these two have combustible chemistry in spades even if the context of their relationship seems a smidge questionable at first with his continual statements of "claiming" her and her being his plaything and/or toy. For a fiercely independent, kick@$$ woman in her own right, Daisy doesn't seem to mind the terminology.

The fighting scenes are detailed and heart-pounding--almost like reading scenes from La Femme Nikita where the lean, mean fighting machine female main character (FMC) can easily obliterate any obstacle/person/creature in her way. Daisy has had a great mentor and her dedication to rising above being a mere human (chester) in this magical world is spectacular.

The language is more flowery than past Breene novels but it fits the story well with the fae aspect. She paints scenes of vibrant beauty and danger with equal eloquence.

Now here's where I must admit something that may shock some of you. In the earlier series, Demigods of San Francisco, which is the precursor to Obsidian, the vast cast of characters made you want to portal into their world and be friends. Each character was brought to life in the pages of the series and I adored them all...except...Daisy. I know! I know! Most unpopular opinion ever in romantasy fiction. Please no hate mail. But I found Daisy to be annoying in the previous series. Then why did I pick up this book, you ask. Because I know KF Breene will surprise me and the story itself will make it all worth it. While I find Daisy slightly less annoying in this book, the story pulls me in and keeps me reading. And if I have to have Daisy in order to read about Tarian, well, it's just what I gotta do.

Now, as to Tarian, this is fiction--fantasy fiction at that--so his flowery language adds to his allure whereas if a modern day guy talked that way, I'd roll my eyes so high that I'd see the inside of my skull. But with Tarian, it works. Maybe because he's fae, maybe because he's smoking hot and seductive. Regardless, I don't care. Give me more Tarian.

My one issue, if you can call it that, with the book is there almost nothing of the rest of the Demigods of San Francisco gang. Now this is Daisy and Tarian's story so Lexi, Kieran and his Six, and Mordecai not being upfront and center was expected, but I missed them. Not a complaint, just a sigh. Maybe they'll be more in future books in the series.

Overall, loved the story and the switch over to fae romance. KF Breene brings an entire new realm to brilliant light. There's plenty of action and adventure, a kick@$$ heroine, a hot romantic love/lust interest, and descriptive, eloquent storytelling. There's so much to love about this!
